Learning through Coins

Numismatics Academy is India’s first academy to inculcate the study of world culture, history, geography, art and GK through coins and currencies. Aditya Singhal, founder member of Numismatics Academy, in conversation with Brainfeed shares a unique style of learning.

Q: What was the idea behind Numismatics Academy?

Numismatics Academy is India’s first academy started with the purpose to advance the study of World Culture its History, Geography, Art, GK and much more through coins and currencies as well as develop & enhance interest towards hobbies among the children.

We understand that just like every child has a different and unique face or fingerprints; they do possess a different interest area. Hence, Numismatic academy provides an interactive, adaptive and highly personalized learning opportunity that enables the participants to experience different aspects of the world – at their own pace and in their own style.

Q: What are the learning outcomes with this unique pedagogical style where you use coins as a learning tool?

We are living in the 21st century, and it is high time to think innovative ways to connect children’s interest with learning. So our philosophy includes enquiry-based learning with real-life examples and bringing international pedagogy to the Indian curriculum.

As one picture carries a thousand words and typically one currency note 10 different photos / logos, we are planning to set up a discovery lab (zone) with thousands of note currency and coins, where kids can discover world Culture, History, Geography, Art, GK and much more. We are confident that colourful currency notes and coins will be a good medium for kids to connect with our history and geography instead of just reading about them in school textbooks.

Children will get more aware of their surroundings, will become more creative, will be able to connect with the impacts of different news/events on their life etc. World exposure will help them to improve their Confidence, their Presentation & Communications Skills.

Q: Is the course open to students from different streams? Is it possible for school students to do a full-time course at Numismatics?

Yes, this is open for students from different streams. The primary purpose of these courses is to give exposure to the world’s interesting facts and learn from these facts.

Today, there are very limited universities that offer full-time courses in the Numismatics area. However, Numismatics Academy based in Gurgaon believes that it should be part of the primary curriculum itself.

Q: What are the different career opportunities that students could pursue?

Numismatics Academy program focuses on developing a child’s world exposure, their personalities & their behavioural skills which will prepare them for future Civil Service and other similar competitive exams & interview process.

Further, our programs will also help participants to become global citizens who will be able to connect/understand different cultures of the world irrespective of their main profession like (Doctor / Engineer / CA / CS and many more).

Q: Would the Academy face any major restructuring post-COVID-19? Are there any plans to redesign the curriculum on the horizon?

Numismatics Academy always believes in “change is the only permanent thing,” and we do not have an iota of doubt about seeing a new era of education unperturbed through decades but bound to change in a few years. We are changing our strategies and emphasizing on online classes/modules/programs along with offline programs. We are planning educational board games so that children can learn new things while playing with friends at home.

Q: What is your message to students?

Learning cannot be limited to textbook anymore. We need real-life examples / stories instead of taking aspirations from reading legends’ biographies. Things are changing fast and we have limited time and resources to speed up. We are moving towards globalization and we need more and more global citizens with different mindsets. None of us have the capability to predict future opportunities so we have to keep ourselves ready for the unseen future.
